We’re happy to answer your questions

Does neurofeedback have the ability to ‘’cure’’ anything?

No.Rather, we discuss improvement as compared to a population standard or average.

Is neurofeedback infallible and is it a successful intervention every time for every need?

No. As with any treatment, including medication, we may find that the treatment does not work.

Does neurofeedback improve attention and motor control?

Yes.Indeed, several studies have demonstrated the positive effects of neurofeedback in terms of attention improvements and motor control (ADHD). This research is what has allowed the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) to consider biofeedback/neurofeedback as being as effective as psychostimulant medication commonly used in the treatment of ADHD.

Is everyone a good candidate for neurofeedback?

No.The first evaluation process allows us to accurately determine whether or not you are a good candidate for neurofeedback.

Are electric shocks emmitted to the brain during neurofeedback training?

No.We use sensors that record the electrical activity of the brain.

Does it hurt?

No.Neurofeedback is painless unless you find that exercising mental effort for an hour's time is painful.

Can we cease psychostimulant medication treatment following neurofeedback training?

Yes. Several conditions are necessary in order to achieve this, but it is not uncommon for clients to discontinue their medication if and when it is approved by a doctor, of course.

Does this happen all the time?

No. However our clients can in many cases reduce their medication dosage should they be unable to discontinue usage completely. This will reduce the side effects associated with taking psychostimulants, if any.

Are all neurofeedback practitioners trained professionals?

No. It is important to choose a practitioner who is a member of a professional order in the field of health. It is also recommended that one inquire about the skills and experience of the practitioner in question. Having received the BCIA American certification, the organization which governs the quality of the practice of neurofeedback, is a good starting point, but it is insufficient. An unskilled practitioner may make you lose your time and money, in addition to tarnishing the field's reputation.

Are the gains made in neurofeedback maintained over time?

Yes, except in some rare instances. It is characteristic of operant conditioning to allow maintenance of acquired skills that will then be additionally strengthened when used on a regular basis.
